Getting Lost in the Magic of the Grand Bazaar: What to See, Eat & Savor

There’s no wrong way to experience Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar. It’s a maze of wonder, and every path leads to something beautiful. But if you’re like me, you might find comfort in a ritual. I usually start my visits at the Nuruosmaniye Gate, even though the main entrance is technically the Beyazıt Gate. Something about the way the morning light hits that entrance makes it feel like the right place to begin.

If you’re heading there early, start your day with a pastry from a street vendor, something flaky and warm, and grab a coffee from Kahve Dünyası, ideally sitting outside to take in the hum of the city waking up. It’s one of those simple joys that sets the tone for the day.

From there, I let myself get wonderfully lost inside the bazaar. There’s so much to see: handmade jewelry, vintage kilims, and leather goods tucked away in the quieter, more charming corners. It’s worth slowing down, wandering, and letting the space reveal its hidden treasures.

When it’s time for a sweet break, head to Day Day Bakery. Their apple pastry is almost always fresh from the oven, so fresh it feels like it was waiting just for you. Pair it with a few kandil simidi, savory little sesame cookies that locals love, or fresh böreks, pastries filled with meat or cheese.

Feeling hungrier? Just a short walk outside the bazaar, almost on your way toward the Spice Bazaar, is Dürümcü Raif Usta, home to some of the best kebabs and wraps in the city. If you’re more in the mood for a perfectly layered döner (shawarma), don’t miss Döner Bank. And if you’re after a sit-down meal that still feels local and unpretentious, find your way to Gel Gör Restaurant, quietly hidden just outside the bazaar walls.

After lunch, there’s no better way to finish than with a Turkish coffee, and my favorite way to have it is inside the bazaar, while browsing. Many vendors will offer you one as you shop, and honestly, there’s nothing quite like sipping coffee while surrounded by silks, scents, and stories.

A lot of our own pieces at Natolia NYC took their first shape in the Grand Bazaar. It’s where the Fresco Bloom Choker, the Fresco Bloom Mismatch Earrings, and the Evil Eye Repeller Fish Necklaces first came to life. There’s something about the layers of history, symbolism, and craftsmanship in this place that continues to spark creativity every time I return.
